Speaking of Crab—in Leipsic…

Food Network Magazine has recognized the crab cake sandwich at Sambo’s Tavern, also in Leipsic, as the sandwich for the state of Delaware in its annual 50 sandwiches for 50 state feature. Why? In part, because you can watch the crabbers tie their boats at the dock out front, meaning dining at Sambo’s is an authetic experience, like eating a lobster roll at a roadside joint in Maine. We’re big fans for other reasons, too. (That’s owner Ike Burrows in the photo.) If you missed DT’s story about Sambo’s in the June issue, click here. 674-9724

The Best of the Wurst

Here’s a hearty willkommen to Uschy’s Café, a new German café and deli in downtown Wilmington. (It’s been a long, long time since the city had one of those.) If you’re in the mood for a delicious sandwich of Black Forest ham, this is the place. Uschy’s also has sausages such as bratwurst and knockwurst, other cold cuts and plenty of confections—pastries, cupcakes and, sometimes, Black Forest cake. Uschy’s caters, too. We’ve been waiting awhile for his. Check it out 8 a.m.-4p.m. Monday through Friday at 913 N. Market St. 654-9131, facebook.com/UschysCafe

Bigger and Better

While we’re feeling Prussian, a special note: Andreas Janke’s excellent Frankfurt Bakery in Dover has expanded. It’s a local favorite for sweets like Bavarian apple cake and elephant ears; French breads, German breads and brötchen rolls; and pies and cakes (more Black Forest. Mmmmm.) Frankfurt also makes excellent sandwiches with top-quality meats and cheeses, and there’s excellent quiche—a fave among regulars. Frankfurt is always worth a visit. Check out the bigger, better version soon. 741-0180, frankfurtbakery.com

Burger Games

The Jake’s Wayback Burgers fifth annual Chowdown Showdown is coming Aug. 11. Just try to devour the Triple Triple Burger, a nine-patty monster with nine slices of cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. If you can get one down faster than the other contestants, you’ll win an iPad2 and be entered in the Wayback Burgers Facebook video contest, “Why Wayback is Waybetter,” where you could win a $1,000 cash prize, based on how many Facebook fans vote for your vid. Hit Jake’s at Bear, Middletown, Newark, Rehoboth Beach, Smyrna or Kennett Square at 2 p.m. to get in on the fun. facebook.com/waybackburgers

Mature Wine, Indeed

At 125 years old, the Wente Family Estate in California, headed by fourth-generation winemaker Carlyne Wente, is the oldest continuously family owned and operated winery in the United States. Winery rep Tracy MacPherson will talk a bit about the place—the Wine Enthusiast American Winery of the year for 2011—and its products as the Women and Wine series of SoDel Concepts continues at Premier Wine & Spirits in Stanton on Aug. 9. The series will shift back downstate, to Lupo di Mare in Rehoboth Beach, beginning Sept. 11.  996-9463

There’s Beer in Hog Heaven

You like beer. You like barbecue. Then it’s settled—you’re headed to Fordham Brewery in Dover on Aug. 25 for the Hogs & Hops Charity BBQ Competition and Craft Beer Festival. Taste delicious beers such as Copperhead Ale and Wisteria Wheat while sampling pork barbecue from amateur chefs who think they can do it best. Tour the brewery. Watch the keg toss. Check out crafts and games for the kids, as well as a rock climbing wall and a reptile show with a real alligator. A portion of proceeds benefits the Dover Fraternal Order of Police Emergency Funds, so, again, it is possible to do good while eating and drinking. Never forget. 678-4810, fordhambrewing.com
