David Bowie Forever

A tribute at World Cafe Live at the Queen will honor the iconic artist.

A collective of musicians from the Delaware Valley will gather on May 21 to pay tribute to one of rock music’s most revered artistic icons. The music of art rock visionary David Bowie will be presented live at World Cafe Live at the Queen in Wilmington in a career-spanning show that promises to be a spectacle for the eyes and ears.

David Bowie’s death on Jan. 10 sent a shock around the world. His impact on music, fashion, movies, art and style is almost impossible to measure. His courage to be different helped change the lives of millions and helped shape the artists of today. The event, on the main stage at World Cafe Live at the Queen, will feature 25 of Bowie’s greatest songs sung by 10 vocalists from surrounding cites and backed up by a band directed by the great local tribute artist Joe Trainor. The celebration will cover Bowie’s catalog from “Space Oddity” to ★ (Blackstar). This will be a true Bowie experience that will cater to both the hardcore and casual fans.

A Night of Stardust will also challenge the audience to dress in true Bowie fashion by attending in the favored Bowie inspired costume of their choice. Proceeds of the show will benefit the Cancer Support Community of Delaware a state wide nonprofit program that provides cancer support programs to participants at no cost.

“As a person that has lost both parents to this disease, and because Bowie himself fought it for a year and a half, it was fitting that this show benefits the great work done by this local organization,” says organizer Greg Shelton. Shelton is the CMO of Digital-Vikings and the McConnell Companies. He is also the co-founder of 1313 Innovation (a Wilmington based Innovation Center) and the creative mind behind the Tech2gether conference. “My vision was to create not just a concert, but an experience that would pay homage to one of the most important creative musicians and artists of our time,” Shelton says. “Bowie never had rails on his creative mission. He always pushed the boundaries, and that’s what we’ve committed to do with A Night of Stardust.”

The event is produced with the help of five-year-old Gable Music Ventures. “Gable Music Ventures couldn’t be happier to be celebrating the five year milestone at World Cafe Live at the Queen, surrounded by friends and family, celebrating the music of one of the most influential artists of our generation,” says owner Gayle Dillman. Joe Trainor is one of the area’s busiest music directors. He divides his time between the award-winning Joe Trainor Trio, In The Light (Delaware’s premier tribute band), and Wilmington’s own City Theater Company. His past shows have included In The Light’s An Evening Of Queen and An Evening of The Who.

“David Bowie is one of those artists that musicians love to perform—artistic enough to be a challenge while being accessible and admired by a wide audience. Our hope is to present this show in a way that honors the man as much as the music,” Trainor says.

Tickets are $20-$40 at www.queen.worldcafelive.com  The show begins at 8 p.m.
