'Philly Loves Bowie Week' Kicks Off Friday, Jan. 5

The city's 10-day celebration of David Bowie will conclude with "A Night of Stardust," a tribute concert that sold out last year at Wilmington's World Cafe Live (now The Queen).

Delaware’s own Greg Shelton first created "A Night of Stardust" in 2016 after David Bowie’s death shocked the world. The celebration is happening again this year, on Sunday, Jan. 14, at Philadelphia's Union Transfer, as the grand finale of Philly Loves Bowie Week (Jan 5–14).

After "A Night of Stardust" sold out at World Cafe Live in both Wilmington and Philadelphia in 2016 and 2017, Shelton and his team (comprised of Gable Music Ventures, Dan Kauffman, and Lance Davis) knew a larger venue was needed.

"David Bowie paved the way musically, creatively and stylistically for so many people and continued to be a fearless visionary even up until his death," says Shelton. "I wouldn't be the person I am without him. It's a pleasure to honor him at the highest level for the things that he gave me, the people of Philly and the world of music, art, motion pictures and fashion."

All of last year's band members are returning for the Philadelphia event, as are many of the vocalists. Earl Slick (who toured extensively with Bowie) and Mark Plati (who performed and produced with Bowie) will also be performing.

The concert will include a silent auction of Bowie memorabilia, plus other items for attendees to bid on. All auction proceeds will benefit The Bowie Fund for The Cancer Center at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).

At every Philly Loves Bowie Week event, says organizer Robert Drake, "[... W]e will work to raise both funds and awareness through the magic that is David Bowie. As the Starman said himself, 'Let all the children boogie.'"
