Summer Children’s Theater: The Grand Opera House in Wilmington presents Pippi Longstocking, Electric Youth, The Great Dinosaur Mystery and Cinderella

You’ve got a long summer with kids on your hands. What to do?

Visit the The Grand Opera House for its Summer Children’s Theater. A series of several great shows starts July 14 with the musical “Pippi Longstocking,” the classic tale of a child’s freedom. Shows are 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Imagination Players performs “Electric Youth!” on July 21 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The musical variety show addresses themes like teamwork, self-esteem and tolerance.

“The Great Dinosaur Mystery” will be performed by DinoRock on July 28 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. This bit of musical sleuthing will delight with baffling clues that lead to a big finish.

Then the Missoula Children’s Theatre will present the timeless “Cinderella” at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Aug. 5. The pumpkin patch, the mice, the Fairy Godmother, evil stepmother and sisters, and Prince Charming with his glass slipper all come to life. Everything is performed by local children.

A Grand Lineup

While we’re on the subject of The Grand, it bears mention that there are more good shows lined up for 2011-2012 than we can mention in the arts preview that you’ll read in the September ish, so here are a few to start planning for now.

First, the music:
Country legend Jerry Jeff Walker—with a full band—plays October 2. Jazz guitarist and 17-time Grammy winner Pat Metheny plays Oct 7.

Five-time Grammy winner Mary Chapin Carpenter appears October 9. A multimedia tribute, The Miles Davis Experience: 1949-1959, with world-renowned trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, plays November 10. Just announced: Alt-rock giants The Pixies have extended their Doolittle tour, and it’s coming to Wilmington.

Did we mention comedy? TV star Wanda Sykes appears October 12, followed by the inimitable Steven Wright October 21. Sinbad returns January 13.

Then there are other performances: the spooky “Magic of the Night” October 23 and the National Acrobats of The People’s Republic of China on November 22.

That just scratches the surface. (We had to leave a few surprises.) So make time for a visit. Check thegrandwilmington.org.
