Mary Catherine Kelley Directs 'King Lear'

Catch a performance of the Shakespearean classic over two weekends.

Mary Catherine Kelley directs Arden Shakespeare Gild’s production of the tragedy of “King Lear” under the stars June 18-20 and June 26-27. One of Shakespeare’s greats, “King Lear” is a play about politics and family, but mostly about family. King Lear and his three daughters make up one family. The Earl of Gloucester and his two sons, make up the other. Their challenges and the decisions they make propel the plot, with foolish and fatal choices made, loyalty tested, and chaos ensuing.

Wilmington actor Greg Tigani takes on the role of Lear, a venerable king whose faculties, both mental and physical, are taxed to the point of breaking. His world is full of steadfast friends and implacable foes. He rules a people who look to the stars to define their destiny.

Arden veteran Dan Tucker plays the Earl of Gloucester, whose tale is ultimately horrifying and tragic. Brothers Robert Tietze and George Tietze play the brothers Edgar and Edmund, Gloucester’s sons. Kerry Kristine McElrone, Emma D. Orr, and Lily Dove Ozer appear as Lear’s daughters. The story is timeless, the characters unforgettable, and the outdoor stage with boulders and trees perfect for a summer evening’s Shakespeare encounter.
