Happy Thanksgiving

The arts heat up.

You know what Thanksgiving weekend means: The holiday art scene begins.

First stop is Hagley Museum for “Christmas at Hagley,” which begins November 26 and runs through January 2.

This year’s focus at Hagley is “Winter Pastimes.” Eleutherian Mills is decorated Colonial Revival style, with natural materials like flowers, greens, fruit and vegetables.

The Gibbons House will display handmade decorations. Visitors can make a paper link in the Brandywine Manufacturers’ Sunday school, then place it on the Gibbons House Christmas tree. Other activities include cutting out ornaments, games, and sampling some of the yummy baked goods made in the woodburning stove.

The Workers’ Hill area ‘tis the scene for 16 community and school choirs that will perform weekends through January.

Dazzling Winterthur

Yuletide 2010 at Winterthur highlights the winter celebrations of H. F. du Pont and his family at Winterthur in the first half of the 20th century. H. F. du Pont owned acres of real estate, but Winterthur was his castle. The family gathered to celebrate the holidays there.

Upstairs, displays highlight the mid-1800s through the 1930s and 1940s, when Ruth du Pont decorated for hundreds of her husband’s male relations at the annual New Year’s Calling. The celebrations will end with “Harry’s Party,” the annual staff party that marked the highpoint of the season for the estate employees and their families.

The toys are from the 1950s. They lay arrayed beneath a tree decorated with “bubble” lights.

Happy holidays.
