Delaware Arts and Entertainment Education: We Kids Rock in Wilmington founded by Bill Currier, music, Grand Opera House, Arden Gild Hall, World Café Live at The Queen

This one is for “really little kids,” says founder Bill Currier, by which he means 6-month-olds to toddlers. It’s never too soon to learn how to interact with music, which We Kids Rocks promotes through 10-week sessions where kids listen to a CD of local musicians playing original music and covers (a ska version of “Puff the Magic Dragon”) at home, then sing and play along with simple instruments like rhythm sticks and shakers as the We Kids Rock band plays live for them every week. The exercise develops motor skills, vocal skills, even math skills. “Little kids have such a capacity for repetition,” Currier says. “I’ve had them correct me before. ‘No, wait—it doesn’t go like that.’” Classes are offered regularly at The Grand Opera House, but perfomances also happen at venues such as Arden Gild Hall and World Cafe Live at The Queen. “The biggest thing for a child is that they come to class every single week and see people perform live music for them,” Currier says. “With so much television and computers, that gets lost on them. I think that’s also what helps the parents. Anything you can do with them that is fun is a plus.” Wilmington, 888-490-0695, wekidsrock.com
