A Sneak Peek at NYC’s Fashion Week

So you have seen the flyers all over town: The Newark Film Festival is here again and I really, really hope you don’t let the week go by without checking out this year’s wonderful picks. (The festival runs through Thursday.)

In case you didn’t know, the mind behind the festival is the fun-loving yet crotchety (just teasing) Barry Schlecker. Barry is one of my favorite guys in town for lots of reasons but mostly because he is all about creating creative, wonderful events to keep Delaware’s arts and film scene alive and well.

Yes, thanks to Barry we have the revival of the Brandywine Arts Festival and, now in its third year, his wonderful Newark Film Festival, which is showing some of the best “movies that matter.”

So to get to the fashion segment of this post—for the second year, my friend, interior designer Rose Giroso (Rose Authentica), and I hosted the Wine/Design Film/Fashion pre-party for the festival’s opening night, which just so happened to premiere the new documentary “Dressed.” “Dressed” is the true story of Nary Manivog, who overcomes a broken childhood and homelessness to pursue his dream of becoming a fashion designer. Filmed during NYC Fashion Week, the film has lots of footage of runway shows and up-close interviews with famous designers like Nanette Lepore, where they take you behind the scenes to witness what it takes to make it in the fashion industry.

Moreover, it just so happens that “Dressed,” was directed and produced by local filmmakers, David Swajeski and Maryanne Grisz, who showed up at the party looking like the hip NYC filmmakers that they are. (They live in NYC, Philly and Wilmington.)

What was the key piece to looking cool? The well-fitted black jacket!

Rose and I found our frocks at the wonderful NV Boutique, which happens to carry some of the top brands like BCBG, Max Mara, Diane Von Furstenberg, Alice + Olivia and other designer brands that you won’t see locally.

So if you have always wanted to sit in the front row of NYC Fashion Week, don’t miss this film! “Dressed,” will be one of the selected films at the upcoming Wilmington Film Festival at the Delaware Art Museum.
