Growing up in a poor area of southern New Jersey, Chandra Pitts never thought she would succeed. Today, as the CEO of One Village Alliance, she’s mentoring children and teens with a similar story, helping them to feel less alone.

One Village Alliance is a community-based nonprofit working to uplift children and their families toward success through education, entrepreneurship and the arts. Pitts founded the organization 10 years ago. “I knew I was going to do something in my life to make life better for children,” she says.

Today, the nonprofit offers a variety of programs helping with education, arts, mentorship and action around social justice. Along with assisting Wilmington and other Delaware communities, Pitts’ organization reaches as far as West Africa, thanks to a grant received during the Obama administration. When the COVID-19 pandemic shut down public spaces the alliance regularly used, they found their own warehouse space that Pitts calls the Freedom Center, offering children a safe space when many others shut their doors.
