You could fill three issues explaining what it takes to make a magazine every month, which says nothing of the additional DT titles that are in the works at any given time. On top of it all, we’ve decided to launch a new web site, which brings no small number of new tasks.
Which is why we love our interns and research assistants so very much. They perform the tedious but important jobs other staffers simply don’t have time for, all for the experience, a few bylines and, in some cases, a handful of college credits.

Jen Hayes of Bear is an English major-journalism minor at the University of Delaware. She diligently compiled a list of races and events for this month’s Delaware Health & Fitness and contributed some of the writing in next month’s beauty feature.
Stephanie Ostroff, a journalism major at the University of Maryland, worked painstakingly with Jen Bray on the golf feature and the Delaware Health & Fitness resources. There’s even more to come.
Emily Riley of Wilmington is an English-journalism major at UD. She’s largely responsible for the writing of next month’s beauty feature. You’ll see her peek into a local doc’s medicine cabinet soon.
Kristen Schindler is a marketing major at UD. She’s been busy taking photos for various stories while tracking down stock art for others. It’s no easy job.
Jackie Smagala of Wilmington studies at Salisbury University, where she majors in English. She had the task of verifying all the information about reception sites in next month’s Delaware Bride while helping to research an arts preview.
In IT, meet Kyle Armstrong of Wilmington, a communications and Spanish major at UD; Madison M. Cessna of Wilmington, a professional writing major at Elizabethtown College; and Jane Crifasi of Wilmington, an English major at the University of Richmond.
They’re working hard with UD folks Annie Thomas of Wilmington, a comm major, and Deepa Rao of Hockessin, who majors in psychology and English-journalism. Overseeing all is Jarred Phillips of Wilmington, an English-journalism major who holds the record for length of service as an intern.
The IT crew is busy loading info about stores, restaurants, spas, health clubs and other places into a database that will make your search for local resources a snap. It’s tedious work that requires precision, and they’re doing it admirably well. Double-check them at www.delawaretoday.com.

- If you need inspiration, attend the annual luncheon of Goodwill Industries. The stories of the folks it has boosted into the working world—people who must manage cognitive disabilities, medical issues and other circumstances that would vex many—are amazing. Wilmington University deserves thanks for scholarships it has awarded to Goodwill honorees over the years.
- The annual Delaware Press Association dinner at the University & Whist Club was as fun as ever. It’s always great to see colleagues from other medias. Seeing Mayor James Baker and his communications staff attend was nice. Congratulations to the DT editorial team and family of freelancers for their fine showing in the contest.
- What would Best of Delaware research be without first-hand taste testing? No amount of rain could have prevented us from driving to Casapulla’s in Elsmere for an Italian sub on deadline day. Classic.
