Making History: Best of Delaware: Delaware Historical Society: Civil War

Cheers all around.

The thing to remember about the “Best Of” issue is why “Best Of” exists. Certainly one reason is to honor our readers by publishing their votes for Delaware’s best businesses and notable individuals. The issue also is tied to the Best of Delaware Party, a charity event. Proceeds from the bash on July 21 benefit charities that serve local children. If you choose to join us, know that your contributions help those in need. Read all about the party, beneficiaries and sponsors on page 147.

You’ll notice major changes in the structure of the magazine this month, but we’re especially pleased to debut the DT: History page, an editorial collaboration between Delaware Today and the Delaware Historical Society. Each month we’ll publish a photo from the society’s collection and offer anecdotal perspective on the period. We begin our series in Bethany Beach and plan to commemorate scenes from a different county every month. We’re humbled that the fine staff at the Delaware Historical Society has chosen to work with us, and we’re thrilled to work with them.

Theresa MedoffHistory is a hot subject. Unless you’ve spent the last several months under a rock, you know that the four-year commemoration of the sesquicentennial of the Civil War has begun. Writer Theresa Gawlas Medoff provided substantive content for “Playing Dead,” the stunning feature designed by Kelly Carter.

Theresa camped with re-enactors in Harrington to write the piece that begins on page 62. She slept in a canvas tent, wore period clothing, ate whatever the re-enactors ate and endured rainy, chilly conditions. Sounds tough, I know, but this is what it takes to write great features. We applaud Theresa’s passion, positive energy and work ethic.

More applause goes to the Best of Delaware winners. We look forward to seeing them—and you, our readers—at the party.

Photograph by Jared CastaldiLouise The City Regional Magazine Association (CRMA) conference was held in Chicago this year. There was an abundance of knowledge with panels about social media, cover design, branding and much more. And it was a real honor being able to listen to David Curcurito, design director of Esquire, talk about ‘what it takes to produce, maintain and reinvent’ cover design. The entire conference sends you back feeling exciting, inspired and ready to design!

Drew The Delaware Press Association Annual Meeting and Communications Contest Awards Banquet was a first-class affair. Congratulations to all the folks who made it such a success and to all of the award winners—and to whomever whipped up the Key lime pie.

Kelly Jared and I met up with Luke Matheny at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in NYC to shoot the Best of Delaware cover. Everything you’ve read about Matheny is true. He’s down-to-earth, polite, hilarious, smart and extremely creative. I had a great time. Two days after we met with him, he moved out to L.A. to conquer that side of the United States. Good luck, Luke. I know we are going to be seeing a lot of amazing projects from you in the future.

Jared The “Best Of” issue is always one of my favorite issues to shoot. I love visiting Delaware’s best restaurants and photographing beautiful dishes like the sushi at The Cultured Pearl. Yum!

Katie Now that 2 Fat Guys has opened a location nearer to our DT office—see the Best of Delaware feature—1 Fat Girl finally got a chance to try the Elvis burger, topped with peanut butter and bacon. A hunk of burning love, indeed (the burger that is, not me).

Mark It’s always a pleasure to talk about eminent local artists, so I enjoyed speaking with John Schroeder about a new show of works by his late father, the legendary Howard Schroeder. Howard rates with painters Jack Lewis and Ed Loper as local treasures not only for the quality of his work, but his influence on other painters and local culture. For more, check
