Baby, It’s Cold Outside

February can be a tough month. The holidays are over. It’s cold. Heating bills soar. You have to wear boots to walk the dog.

So we figured we’d start something fun this month. “Drew’s Corner” is a new column written by our lovable yet opinionated managing editor Drew Ostroski. We gave Drew space to comment on things he deems important—or odd. We never know what goes on inside that mind of his, but at least now there’s a place for his curious ruminations. If you have something about Delaware that you’d like to rant about, email Drew at dostroski@delawaretoday.com.

Running with the “fun” theme, Fay Jacobs offers a story about “The Fun Department,” a group of nutty folks with strange titles who bring fun back into the corporate environment. They get paid to turn meetings into sitcoms. Does everyone love such joviality? You decide.

Lauren WilsonWe also offer a story about Traci Lynn, written by former WPVI Action News reporter Lauren Wilson. We welcome Lauren to the magazine. Pam George has penned a fantastic feature for steak lovers. This dining issue is something we refer lovingly to as an ode to the Delaware steak house. Pam’s got the beef on the best places to go and what sides to order. She even suggests a seafood dish for non-carnivorous mates who get dragged out to dinner. We were salivating by the time we finished editing this comprehensive story.

And for women of a certain age who choose to maintain long hair (like me), we’ve got a feature for you to comb through. Writer Christine Facciolo braves the question of whether women in the corporate world should chop off their locks to be taken seriously, and if there’s any correlation whatsoever between long hair and a person’s level of intelligence. The story continues on our Web site, where Christine determines whether men with long hair deal with the same issues. Visit delawaretoday.com to find out, and also to see if you guessed correctly the names of the people we photographed for the story—like the one pictured at left.

You get the point. This is a “fun” issue meant to combat the winter doldrums. Heat up a cup of cocoa, throw on your jammies and enjoy. Warm regards.

Team Notes

From Left: Louise Bolin, Drew Ostroski, Kelly Carter, Jared Castaldi, Katie McCabe and Mark NardoneMark  Visiting Coleman’s Christmas Tree Farm has become a family tradition. There’s no place like it. We love scouting the perfect tree, but we also look forward to some good food. This year, Dina and I were happy to have shared the trip with our newborn—another dimension of family that made the tradition even more special.

Kelly  Mmmmm, steak. I grew up in a house where we had steak at least twice a week. I don’t eat it as much anymore, but I sure was craving it every night that we had a steak photo shoot. There are some great steak houses out there. If you’re a carnivore, you’ll love them.

Louise  In December, I attended Delaware Today’s distinguished Women in Business Luncheon for the first time. It was great seeing friends, meeting new people and networking (plus the food was so nommie)! This is one event I plan never to miss again! A big round of applause to our marketing team for putting on such an amazing event!

Drew  It was cool to see such an impressive collection of folks at the annual DT Women in Business Luncheon. It was also a pleasure to meet Dr. Betty Caffo of Wilmington University. Her presentation as keynote speaker was highly interesting and entertaining. I especially enjoyed chatting (and lunching) with Susan Hillebrecht of Delaware Guidance Services and Caroline Jones of Kind to Kids. See you next year.

Katie  From two recent events: I’d be remiss not to mention my tablemates at the WIB luncheon as well. The people who look after my millions at Wilmington Trust/M&T Bank were both gracious and easy to chat with. And thumbs up to the lobster corn dogs at Abbott’s Grill in Milford. Yum.

Jared  This month I was given a dream assignment: Go to a bunch of great steak houses and shoot a lot of steak. And yes, sometimes you get to sample what you shoot.
