Welcome to Home Skillet, which is back from a week at Dewey Beach with great story ideas and alcohol withdraw. One quick programming note: Home Skillet will now be posting every Tuesday morning, instead of our usual Wednesday whenever. Please adjust your Outlook calendars accordingly. Here’s what’s in store for this balmy week.
Thursday, August 13: The triumvirate of restaurants situated on the corners of 8th and Union streets in Wilmington—these being Union City Grille, Walter’s Steakhouse and Pomodoro—are joining forces Thursday for a all-out celebration of food, wine and art.
Beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, dine at any three of the above restaurants for a fixed price of $50 a head. A portion of the proceeds will go to supporting the West End Neighborhood House. The restaurant’s signature dishes will be yours, along with interesting wine pairings. After dinner, guests will congregate at Walter’s banquet room for dessert and a wine-and-art auction.
Here’s what you’ll feast and sip on at each restaurant:
At Pomodoro: Piccolo Caprese and mushroom risotto (paired with Stellina di Notte Pinot Grigio and Chianti)
At Union City Grille: Crab bisque and seafood hot pot (paired with Edna Valley Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay and Pinot Noir)
At Walter’s Steakhouse: Slow-cooked short ribs with braised red cabbage (paired with Monterey Vineyards Chardonnay and Pinot Noir)
Grab tickets here.
Saturday, August 15 through Sunday, August 16: Free love is kaput. Drum circles are passé. The price of tie-dying supplies is through the roof. Hey, even hippies get the blues sometimes.
Celebrate with more free spirits at Home Grown Café’s first annual Blues & Brew Festival, a weekend-long combination of food, beer and live blues performances.
The event kicks off Saturday afternoon with a brunch at 12:30 p.m. and continues throughout the day. On Sunday, another brunch closes things out. For a complete rundown, including performance schedules, click here.
Tuesday, August 18: Food Network star and self-proclaimed “palate snatcher” Julio Lazzarini and his Orillas Tapas Bar & Restaurant will present a five-course tapas and wine dinner Tuesday.
Next Tuesday’s aptly-named “Iberian Experience”—featuring wines from Spain and Portugal—begins at 7 p.m. Call for reservations at 427-9700.
