Holiday Extravaganza

Editors: Schellville

In 2017, Sussex County–based builder Schell Brothers started a magical Christmas village called Schellville, behind Tanger Seaside Outlets in Rehoboth. It was an immediate hit with families looking to celebrate the holiday season. In 2022, Schellville expanded to 5½ acres. It now includes train rides, snowfall for 15 minutes each hour, Santa and Mrs. Claus, a roller rink, a sled hill, more miniature houses, live entertainment, an artisan alley, and much more. There is free admission, and in the spring, Schellville celebrates Easter with a host of activities. Rehoboth

Place to Find a Climbing Community

Editors: Delaware Rock Gym

Since 2007, Matt McCorquodale’s indoor-climbing concept has offered fellow enthusiasts a way to develop their skills—and build community—without having to cross state lines. (Delaware isn’t exactly known for epic rock formations, after all.) Whether you’re into bouldering, top rope, or lead climbing, you’ll find diverse terrain and routes for climbers of all levels. To help you rise to the challenge, Delaware Rock Gym introduces new routes every week, plus courses for beginners and intermediate climbers who are ready to transition to sport climbing and the outdoors. Place to Get High

Editors: Alapocas Run State Park Rock Climbing Wall

Get a new perspective of the park—plus an adrenaline rush—at Delaware’s only publicly accessible rock-climbing wall. Opposite Bancroft Mills on the Brandywine River, the 78-foot-high main wall is made of blue gneiss (Wilmington’s famous “blue rock”), formed from a quarry that operated from the late 1800s until 1938. To obtain a permit, you’ll need to be an experienced top-rope climber; novices can sign up for a course at the park. Start ’em young at Delaware State Park’s Nature Rock Climbing Camp, where kids 8 and older can learn the basics of climbing and explore the natural world during the summer months. Wilmington

Skate Park

Editors: 7th Street DIY Skatepark

There’s something special about doing it yourself—an ethos that skateboarders wear like a badge of honor. The 7th Street DIY Skatepark is a collaborative grassroots effort between the city of Wilmington (which donated the space), Kinetic skate shop, and the local skateboarding community. Started with a few small obstacles brought by Kinetic founders Brannon John and Ben Jones, it has grown and continues to be built and modified by the skaters themselves. 7th Street is known across the entire country and has become a mandatory stop for professionals while they are passing through Delaware. There are no rules—just be respectful and have fun!
