Vibes & Marimba artist Arthur Lipner is one of the top keyboard percussionists of his generation. This exciting evening is an opportunity to experience his world of percussion first-hand. Arthur is the journeyperson in the documentary Talking Sticks and will be available for Q&A after the screening. Next, the Brasilian Vibes Trio – Nanny Assis (vocals/guitar/percussion), Leonardo Lucini (basses), Arthur Lipner Vibes/marimba) will present a concert set of Brazilian music. Following the show, join the band as they Samba march into the streets outside the theater! This is an all-ages evening not be missed!
TALKING STICKS (2016) This documentary tells the fascinating story of vibraphone (vibes) and marimba. Filmed in Norway (ice xylophone), Ghana (small village), Mexico (marimba factory), Brazil (Nat’l Symphony Orchestra, Rio Carnival), Iceland (stone marimba) and USA, it includes cultural and creative insights, historical perspectives, manufacturing on three continents, and much more. World renowned percussionist Arthur Lipner is the journeyperson. His passion and creative struggles are inspirational, embodying the human desire for identity and the sharing of one’s personal voice with the world. BRASILIAN VIBES TRIO is a one-of-a-kind band. Lead vocalist Nanny Assis, from Bahia, has won the prestigious “Best Brazilian Vocalist in USA” by Brazilian Press Awards twice. His charisma and virtuosity have delighted audiences from New Zealand to Israel, Turkey to Japan. Assis, who has written music for the upcoming NYC show “Rio Uphill”, also plays guitar and percussion. Arthur Lipner has performed/taught in almost thirty countries and appeared on over 50 albums. An in-demand educator, he has presented workshops at 300 schools on six continents – including 18 trips to Brazil. Leonardo Lucini is from Rio de Janeiro. One of NYC’s first-call Brazilian bassists, Leo is also a composer and co-leader of the group Origins. The Brasilian Vibes Trio brings forth the energy and lyricism of Brazilian music in a sonic and visual delight.
