Wilmington Friends School

Founded in 1748, Wilmington Friends offers an unsurpassed academic program, and just as important, is a great place to grow up. What often brings families to Quaker education (95 percent of the families who choose Friends are not Quaker) is the appeal of an academic program with depth within a caring community that balances focus on the individual with responsibility to the common good.

The intellectual tradition of Quakerism is very demanding; it’s a tradition in which “truth” is something you have to pursue actively and constantly ~ you can’t memorize it. Students at Friends do have to memorize facts, but they also really have to think. They are encouraged to ask questions; are expected to demonstrate that they can think independently, creatively, and cooperatively; and are asked to be open-minded, always testing ideas against experience and new information.

Throughout our history, Friends School has been a pioneer in education by providing tuition aid since the 1700s; teaching global geography since the early 1800s; developing Delaware’s first kindergarten; and hosting international students since 1947. Friends is the State’s first school to offer the International Baccalaureate Programme (IB), to join the School Year Abroad (SYA) consortium, to be selected for the national Malone Scholars Program, and to join the Malone Schools Online Network (MSON).

Our Reggio Emilia-inspired preschool recently had classrooms renovated, and new facilities include 6,200-square-foot Global Learning Center that is net-zero (no carbon footprint), a theater, design labs, a turf field and track. We offer computer programming and Singapore Math beginning in lower school; Spanish beginning in Pre-K; Spanish, Chinese and French in 6th through 12th grade; and interscholastic sports beginning in 7th grade. Beginning in 5th grade, all students are issued a laptop as part of our 1-to-1 laptop program.
