1. Since Cupid is making his appearance this month, consider a fine-dining establishment that encourages romance. Perhaps the most celebrated is The Green Room in the Hotel du Pont (Wilmington, 594-3100), where guests dine in an opulent atmosphere worthy of a scene in “Downton Abbey.” The food—and the amazing desserts—are every bit as sumptuous.
2. Dan and Missy Lickle are responsible for the cheeky Krazy Kat’s (Montchanin, 888-4200) in Montchanin Village, which is also home to an inn and spa. According to Philadelphia Inquirer food writer Craig LaBan: “The dining’s as serious as the decor is wacky.” If you stay at this highly praised inn, you can sip, sup and stroll back to your room.
3. The Lickles also own The Back Burner Restaurant (Hockessin, 239-2314), which was a pioneer when it opened in 1980. As the area has steadily grown, the Burner’s pumpkin-mushroom soup keeps winning new fans.
4. In comparison, the nearby House of William & Merry (Hockessin, 234-2255) is a newcomer—and a delicious one. The restaurant, owned by husband-and-wife chefs Bill Hoffman and Merry Catanuto, is in an old farmhouse, but the menu is fresh and modern. Though it changes often, the menu usually features Hoffman’s favorite ingredient, foie gras, in some form or fashion.
5. In western Sussex, Bon Appetit (Seaford, 629-3700) has ruled the gourmet roost since it opened in 1991. The French restaurant is infused with romance, right down to the gilt mirrors and owners Chino and Karen Pedemonte, who fell in love while working in a New York restaurant.
6. At the beach, The Buttery (Lewes, 645-7755) is a don’t-miss dining destination. Its location in the Trader Mansion makes it an elegant dining experience. The Victorian building retains many of a sea captain’s appurtenances.
7. The Back Porch Café (Rehoboth Beach, 227-3674) evolved from a casual sandwich café in 1974 into a revered restaurant with exceptionally prepared cuisine served in a mostly al fresco atmosphere.
8. Victoria’s, in the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel (Rehoboth Beach, 337-0615), offers the Victorian touches that typify a romantic decor, as well as an exceptional view of the ocean. During the warm months, you can sit outside. (It’s great for brunch.)
