Why would a restaurant in Delaware City (pop. 1,725 at last count) be talking to cigar manufacturers with an eye toward introducing its own brand of stogie? Because that restaurant is Lewinsky’s on Clinton (92 Clinton St., 834-8000, www.lewinskysonclinton.com), a 2,250-square-foot gastropub with a name that gives a not-sosubtle wink to President Bill Clinton’s association with White House intern Monica Lewinsky, a scandal that led to his impeachment in 1998. Lewinsky’s opened with much fanfare last summer. Specialty cocktails and craft beers flow from the bar, while the kitchen serves up its own version of pub grub with house-cured pastrami and corned beef, pierogi, pommes frites and desserts. “We’ve gotten such a super response,” says Dick Cathcart, city manager of Delaware City and one of several investors in the eatery. “The vast majority of our patrons tend to be young professionals who come from outside Delaware City or [who motor across the river] from New Jersey.” Lewinsky’s also hosts live music and other special events. A small retail line includes T-shirts, hoodies and blue dresses—and soon, cigars.
