When rumblings of a local grilled cheese competition first emerged, our first reaction was, “What took so long?!”
Well, it’s finally here. Building on the success of the seven-year-strong Delaware Burger Battle, founder JulieAnne Cross is introducing a tasty new competition: The First State’s inaugural Grilled Cheese Battle. The event takes place on Thursday, May 10, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Wilmington’s Delaware Park.
A total of 11 local restaurants will compete for the People’s Choice trophy, determined by guest votes. Tickets ($35 in advance, $50 at the door) entitle guests to a sample of each grilled cheese, plus two drink tickets for beer or wine. Parking is free; valet is available for a fee.
Participating eateries are: Buckley’s Tavern, Delaware Park, Delicious Craving, Drip Café, Home Grown Café, Hotel Du Pont, Lefty’s Alley & Eats, Maiale Deli & Salumeria, Metro Pub & Grill, Mojo Loco and Stone Balloon Ale House.
Chefs will use a wide range of cheeses: American, asiago, Brie, Camembert, cheddar, feta, fontina, goat, Gruyere, manchego, Monterey Jack, mozzarella, Parmesan, Pepper Jack and provolone.
A portion of event proceeds will support the Food Bank of Delaware, which provides nutritious foods to Delawareans in need and facilitates long-term solutions to the problems of hunger and poverty through community education and advocacy.
