Happy Birthday, Charcoal Pit

The restaurant celebrates 60 years this September.

The original Charcoal Pit on Concord Pike turns 60 this month, which is great news for burger lovers. To celebrate, you can nab a booklet of 60 coupons for the original 4-ounce Charcoal Pit burger for a mere $60. At a buck per burger, it feels like the ’60s all over again. Not only has the Pit been drawing diners in droves since 1956, it still brings them—along with their children and grandchildren. And though the menu has grown to include such things as chicken cheesesteaks, the burgers remain—as do sundaes named for local high schools. If you’ve never tried its famous Kitchen Sink, bring your family and another. That’s 20 scoops of ice cream with every sundae topping you can imagine. Classic.
