From a classic Italian eatery to a top steak shop, we dish on where the First Family goes to enjoy a stellar meal in the region.
Delaware Today asked restaurateurs around the First State where the nation’s 46th president and the new First Lady like to enjoy a night out. So, where does Joe go?Â
At DiFebo’s Restaurant (12 N. 1st St., Rehoboth Beach; 226-4550), the Bidens enjoy traditional recipes the Delaware staple is known for, like authentic pasta dishes and gravy. “They’re very family–oriented,” says owner Lisa DiFebo, noting that when Joe was vice president, he’d make trips to the beach just to pick up her father’s famous red sauce. Â
At Piccolina Toscana (1412 N. Dupont St., Wilmington; 655-8600), Joe is a traditionalist, preferring the angel hair pasta with tomato sauce and basil, shares Dan Butler, owner and chef. A more spontaneous diner, Jill goes for the best catch of the day. Butler and his staff always enjoy having the Bidens, who they describe as gracious diners who express gratitude after a fine meal. Â
At Claymont Steak Shop (various locations), owner Demi Kollias remembers how Joe stopped in with his daughter Ashley Biden even when he was vice president. (Sometimes he’d send his Secret Service detail to pick up his order.) “We also had the honor of catering a few of his events,” Kollias says. “One that comes to mind is Joe’s Super Bowl parties with the Secret Service.” She says Joe is a fan of the Italian sub, cheesesteak and the Greek salad, which he’s even called to compliment them on. “He has dined several times at our restaurant and is always kind to employees and customers, taking photos, asking personal questions about their families and expressing incredible thanks for the meals.” Â
Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop (Various locations) is one Joe has been known to call the “best in America.” And the franchise couldn’t agree more. “Capriotti’s was founded in Delaware in 1976 and we are thrilled our subs have been a favorite for so many fans over all these years,” says Jane McPherson, senior vice president of marketing. Â
