It seems only fitting that Newark would become home to the latest college food obsession. After all, this is the college town that brought us an all-cereal restaurant (The Cereal Bowl) and one dedicated solely to grilled cheese (Melt Down). Now, comes Insomnia Cookies (70 E. Main St., Newark, 877-632-6654), a boutique chain bakery that started life in a University of Pennsylvania dorm room in 2003. Why Insomnia? The bakeshop, which opened in August, is designed to soothe those middle-of-the-night cravings by delivering its warm cookies until 3 a.m. “Since late night is part of what we do best, we definitely see lots of business during our evening hours,” says marketing manager Courtney Altamura. “If you are up, we are up and will deliver cookies as well as all of our other products right to your door.” Insomnia’s menu ranges from basic cookie classics like chocolate chunk, snickerdoodle and oatmeal raisin, to inventive flavors like s’mores deluxe, chocolate peanut-butter cup and triple chocolate chunk. “We also carry a full ice-cream assortment,” Altamura says, “so our cookiewiches have been very popular.”
