Don’t let the words churrasco or rodizio scare you when you hear people talking about Brazilian steakhouse Churrascaria Saudades in Newark. Churrasco refers to barbecues where skewered meat is grilled over an open flame. A rodizio is a restaurant that serves unlimited food for a fixed price. If you’ve been to the chain Fogo de Chão, you’ll understand the concept. Churrascaria Saudades (230 E. Main St., Unit 203, Newark, 355-5551, www.eatsteaks.com), which opened in April, offers diners continuous skewers of meat and a gourmet salad bar with more than 40 items for $45. General manager Damon Eleuterius describes the procedure. At any time, 50 to 100 skewers of meat (beef, chicken, pork, lamb and sausage) are cooking over a fire in the kitchen. When they are done, the brochettes are transferred to servers, who parade through the dining room looking for green discs on the tables that mean diners are waiting for food. They then carve the meat right at the table, Eleuterius says. There are other price options at the restaurant, which is open daily for dinner. The salad bar-only option is $22.50, and children 6 and under eat for free. Says Eleuterius, “It’s a unique style of service and dining.”
