In a new partnership, local chef Dan Butler’s Toscana Catering will operate the Delaware Art Museum’s Thronson Café, and act as the exclusive caterer for all museum events and rentals.
“Community partnerships drive many of the things that we do,” says the museum’s CEO Mike Miller. “We are thrilled to be partnering with Dan Butler, a stalwart restaurant industry leader in Delaware.”
The Thronson Café has already updated its menu, and is preparing other menus for daytime visitors, weddings, rentals and museum-led events and programs. “I humbly acknowledge that someone thinks the work that I do is art—culinary art—but I’m in awe that I have an opportunity to impress guests in a fine art museum,” Butler says.
Butler is no stranger to working with local museums. In fact, Toscana Catering counts the Delaware Art Museum’s Beaux Arts Ball as one of its first major engagements, in addition to a small café that Butler ran out of the museum in the 1990s. Butler has been the exclusive caterer for Hagley Museum & Library and its Belin House Organic Café since 2010; he also provides meals for tour groups at Mt. Cuba Center and the Delaware Center for Horticulture.

The Thronson Café is open Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 11 a.m.–3 p.m.; Thursdays, 11 a.m.–8 p.m.; and Sundays, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. The museum’s Art is Tasty program combines a 30-minute discussion about a work of art with a delicious lunch in the Thronson Café on the first Friday of every month.
