Margherita’s Pizza, a pizza shop beloved by many Newark citizens and University of Delaware students who enjoy New York-style pizza, has been reborn.

In December 2018, the restaurant closed its doors on East Main Street and decided to reopen in a newly remodeled location on South Main Street. Now, customers can enjoy an expanded menu in a new updated eatery, located at 265 S. Main St.

The shop was first established on Main Street in 1980 and was taken over by the Dellamonica brothers in 1991. In the more than two decades on Main Street this pizza place won the hearts (and stomachs) of many.

Previously located on 134 E. Main St., the shop experienced the main street traffic and flow of college students coming in to grab a quick slice before and after class. Now on South Main Street, it has experienced an influx of family customers.

“It is a better location for a regular customer due to free parking and a bigger store,” said Amerigo “Rico” Dellamonica, co-owner. “Now customers don’t have to deal with the traffic of Main Street, but we are still close to the university.”

The restaurant has also adjusted its hours. Previously being known for its late hours (not closing until 2 a.m.) this eatery discontinued its later hours due to the new location.

While the hours have changed, Dellamonica said the eatery has seen in the three weeks its been reopened that it still attracts local and student customers with families being their primary business.

“Families are our primary customers now, not just students. Previously people would not want to go on Main Street due to traffic and parking,” Dellamonica said. “It’s a better location for the community. Before our business was 90 percent students and 10 percent Newark customers, it has definitely flipped.”

The design of the restaurant has been updated with the move, offering a more urban and modern design with gray textile, neutral toned walls and red booths to give a New York pizza shop and restaurant feel.

With the new location, Margherita’s Pizza was able to expand and have a sit-down dining room while hiring a few more cooks to increase their staff. The menu has also been updated with more than 100 menu items to choose from.

“At our old location we mostly focused on pizza but now we have expanded our menu,” Dellamonica said. “We have now been able to add more pasta dishes, veal, chicken, etc.”

In the near future Margherita’s Pizza would like to incorporate specials into their restaurant such as pasta nights and more lunch specials inside the stores. Specials are typically announced on its Facebook site as well.
