Just in time for the Super Bowl this Sunday, this cocktail recipe is sure to impress party guests with a vibrant green color and a subtly sweet and sophisticated flavor. While many of the familiar green cocktail recipes rely on liqueurs with artificial dyes, the green in this matcha martini recipe is all-natural, thanks to the main ingredient—matcha powder.
Birds fans get a bad rap thanks to rowdy game days and lively celebrations, but Philly is a foodie city, and Eagles fans at your Super Bowl watch party are sure to enjoy this signature cocktail to start off the evening. Plus, the matcha serves as a little dose of caffeine to help keep the party going throughout the night. This cocktail looks sophisticated, brings a complex flavor profile, and is made with just a few simple ingredients.
It starts with a good gin. We used Hendricks, which has a full botanical flavor to complement the earthy and nutty flavors of the matcha and other ingredients. We also love the gin from Smyrna’s Painted Stave Distilling, which is heavy on the herbal and botanical notes.
The next step is finding a good matcha powder. Jade Leaf matcha is a great option, especially if you’re planning on making a lot of cocktails and want the best bang for your buck. You can also check local health food markets for a good matcha. The key is finding the bright and vibrant green color. Along with making your martinis the perfect shade of Kelly green, it’s also a good indicator of a high-quality powder.
Now that we have the earthy and botanical flavors covered, it’s time to add a bit of sweetness. In our recipe, we use 1.5 ounces of hazelnut liqueur. If you prefer an amaretto or other nutty liqueur, feel free to substitute. Similarly, if you like a sweet cocktail, you can also opt to add an extra half-ounce to each cocktail.
This recipe makes one full-sized martini. If you want to batch it, just multiply the recipe! Then you can just throw it in a shaker, give it a quick shake, and pour it into coupe or martini glasses throughout the evening.
If you’re looking for the perfect game-day cocktail to cheer on the Philadelphia Eagles, give this matcha martini a try.
