Perhaps it’s the distinctive hue. Or maybe it’s the fairy-like dusting of sugar, salt and curry powder. Whatever the reason, diners at Michy’s in Rehoboth Beach stop and turn when the Violet Margarita comes through the room. The elegant drink with the curry rim has been on the menu since Michy’s opened in 2018. Those who love the libation can’t do without it.
The cocktail’s recipe is as follows: 2 ounces Hornitos Plata Tequila, 1 ounce fresh-squeezed lime juice, 0.5 ounce of The Bitter Truth Violet Liqueur, 0.5 ounce of Clément Créole Shrubb Orange Liqueur and 0.5 ounce of agave nectar. The curry rim is a 2:2:1 ratio of sugar, salt and curry powder.
When restaurants were limited to carryout in 2020, the Violet Margarita was the most popular to-go cocktail, says bartender Alan Watterson. He credits the contrast of flavors—sweet floral from The Bitter Truth Violet Liqueur and the agave-forward citrusy notes from Hornitos Plata Tequila. Then, of course, there’s the color. “People always ask: ‘What is that?’” Watterson says. We can answer that one: It’s fabulous.
