Libation of the Month
Mad About Mocktails
Where to Find It
Frank’s Wine, Bath House, and Limestone BBQ
Dry January. Janopause. Dryuary. What’s in a name? The lack of alcohol, for one. The expressions refer to a booze-free month after holiday excess. However, many people are sober-curious all year, and you can explore the growing movement at three events this month.
On January 4 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Meg Geisewite will appear at Frank’s Wine in Wilmington for a nonalcoholic beverage tasting. The Newark resident is the author of “Intoxicating Lies: One Woman’s Journey to Freedom from Gray Area Drinking,” and she will sign copies of her book at the event. (The many shades of gray reflect the levels of dependency between sobriety and hitting rock bottom.) The event will feature a food truck and live music.
On January 11 at 3 p.m., Geisewite will lead a “Mocktails + Meditation” class at Bath House: Holistic Healing Studio & Garden in Greenville. Learn meditation basics, enjoy mocktails from Frank’s Wine, and experience a soothing sound bath. The 90-minute class is $40. Visit bathhouse. as.me to sign up.
On January 26 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Limestone BBQ and Bourbon will welcome Deb Podlogar, aka the “Mocktail Mom,” to the Stanton-area restaurant for a brunch buffet and mocktail workshop. Podlogar used wine to handle anxiety from a divorce, breast cancer, and her parents’ deaths. Fed up with feeling hungover, she had her last alcoholic drink on December 31, 2020.
Podlogar wrote “The Happiest Hour,” a mocktail recipe book, and at noon, participants will make a mocktail under her guidance. A $40 fee includes brunch, two mocktails, the demonstration, a goody bag, and a meet-and-greet with Mocktail Mom. (To register, call 274-2085.)
Attendees will learn that “the fun isn’t over, and there are still delicious things to drink, even if they choose something without alcohol,” she says.
