The grills were hot and the napkins were plentiful, but only two restaurants could win awards at the 2016 Delaware Burger Battle (where no alternative burgers were entered this year). The volunteer-run battle, which raises money for The Ministry of Caring’s Emanuel Dining Room, took place on Saturday, Aug. 27 at the Cauffiel House.

After judges spent hours sampling and voting, two restaurants took home top honors: Chelsea Tavern was awarded People’s Choice, and Nordstrom Grill won Critic’s Choice. Chelsea, the Critic’s Choice at last year’s battle, won with their custom-blend burger with smoked chorizo, red onion jam, crispy shallots and Pepper Jack cheese, served on a fresh-baked brioche bun. Nordstrom Grill, new to the Burger Battle scene this year, took home the Critic’s Choice trophy, thanks to their burger made with a mix of chuck steak, short rib and brisket; served on a brioche bun and topped with white cheddar, balsamic red onion, tomato and peppercorn aioli.
