On a Roll

DiFonzo’s Bakery reopens in Wilmington after nearly 10 years.

The DiFonzos—senior and junior.

Word has it that a post announcing the opening of the new DiFonzo’s Bakery in November set a Facebook record for the most “likes” gained in the shortest period of time—3,000 in three hours. But even if it’s not an official record, it’s a good indication of how much customers missed the 60-year-old DiFonzo & Sons in Wilmington’s Little Italy, which closed almost 10 years ago. Now DiFonzo’s is back—in Elsmere, under the ownership of Anthony DiFonzo Jr.—and its legendary sandwich rolls, Italian bread and tomato pie are as delicious as you remember. On its first day of business, the bakery cleared its racks in three hours and turned away 1,000 cars, DiFonzo estimates. “We’re selling 30 pizzas a day,” he says. Even in January—one of the slowest months for bakeries—the place was selling out by noon. (724 Old DuPont Road, Wilmington, 655-5100)
