By Bread Alone

A new owner takes over Old World Bread in Lewes.

Keith Irwin, aka The Bread Whisperer, owns Old World Bread.

Keith Irwin waxes rhapsodic about the baking of bread. “It satisfies all our senses at the same time,” he says. “There’s the touch as you make the dough. You can smell it at all different stages, from yeast fermentation to its baking in the ovens. You actually hear the crackling of the crust. You get to see it grow. Then you actually get to taste it.” It’s what one might expect from the new owner of Old World Bread in Lewes, where Irwin is producing rustic artisan breads with the freshest local ingredients he can find. That includes breads using spent grains from beer makings at local breweries like 16 Mile in Georgetown. Irwin—dubbed The Bread Whisperer by the Rehoboth Foodie—most recently spent five years at Nage restaurant in Rehoboth Beach, where, among other duties, he started the bread program. Old World gives him a chance to focus—and to get in front of customers who appreciate his offerings via the circuit of farmers markets in coastal Sussex.  Look for a retail store soon.
