Coastal Delaware restaurants are reacting to the new coronavirus pandemic by postponing opening weekends and closing down.

With the COVID-19 pandemic spreading across the world and the U.S., many are taking precautions through social distancing and proper hygiene. Now, multiple businesses at the beaches are making plans to postpone their opening dates or shut down their currently open eateries.

Highway One Companies announced it would be opening Dewey businesses later than usual this season, postponing their opening weekends from March 12-15.

A new opening weekend was not announced in the social media post.

“To ensure the safety of our customers, suppliers, entertainers, and employees, we are postponing opening weekend (scheduled for March 12-15) of our Dewey Beach businesses– The Rusty Rudder, Dewey Beach Liquors, Jimmy’s Grille Dewey, and Hotel Dewey,” the post read.

The Bottle & Cork, Northbeach and Ivy do not open until May, the post continued.

“We apologize for any inconvenience,” Highway One Companies concluded the post with.

The Starboard in Dewey Beach is cancelling the remaining events planned for its opening weekend, the restaurant announced on Facebook. The main restaurant will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner but will close at 6 p.m. to avoid crowding in the venue.

“As much as we want all of you to come to Dewey and celebrate the start of spring with us this weekend, this epidemic and public safety is what’s important,” the post read.

Dogfish Head Brewery is also taking action by closing their coastal locations for a week starting Friday, March 13. This includes Dogfish Head Tasting Room & Kitchen, Dogfish Head Brewpub, Dogfish Head’s Chesapeake & Maine and Dogfish Inn. All events during the month of March are also cancelled.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause in your travel plans. We appreciate your understanding and willingness to work with us through this process. Stay tuned for updates,” the post concluded.
