From rooftop decks to spacious patios, these eateries offer great spaces for dining al fresco.


With Delaware entering phase one of reopening businesses on June 1, residents are waiting in anticipation to dine at restaurants in the new normal.

And for those who want to enjoy a meal outside in the spring/summer weather, these eateries offer a variety of outdoor seating. Delaware Today compiled a list of some restaurants across the state with al fresco dining. And remember, phase one of Delaware’s reopening comes with a list of rules and regulations the business and customer must follow. Read in-depth here.

Editor’s note: Some of the restaurants listed have chosen not to reopen their dining spaces during Phase One. Please check their websites for updated information on their reopening schedule.

Backyard Milton

The Backyard at Milton specializes in a mix of classic breakfast and lunch plates, including a wide array of sandwiches, burgers, and salads, plus a bakery and market for desserts. With its quaint, comfortable backyard patio, it’s a welcome break from the home kitchen table.

As of June 1, The Backyard will continue to operate as takeout only. But, customers will now be welcome to enjoy their takeout on the newly updated backyard patio.

Banks’ Seafood Kitchen and Raw Bar

Located adjacent to the Wilmington Riverwalk, Banks’ specializes in fresh seafood. The restaurant’s covered patio gives guests a spectacular view of the water—and the Kalmar Nyckel, when it’s in town.

Bardea Food + Drink

Featuring neo-Italian fare, from pizza to pasta, this James Beard semifinalist offerings patio seating right on downtown Wilmington’s Market Street.

Bardea is currently open for delivery and curbside pick-up for limited hours of operation. Reopening for dine-in June 4, reservations available online or over the phone.

BBC Tavern

This neighborhood bar and grill, BBC Tavern offers soups and salads, sandwiches, and a variety of different entrees, from petite filet Mignon to homemade meatloaf. The restaurant also has a spacious outdoor area.

BBC Tavern is open for limited hours of operation for takeout, delivery, and curbside pickup, with a full takeout menu available on the restaurant’s website. Reservations for dining in begin on June 1.

Big Chill Beach Club

This oceanfront restaurant is nestled in Delaware Seashore State Park. The main dining area boasts a 200-seat rooftop deck and umbrella bar, complete with 360-degree views of the ocean, the Indian River Inlet and Inland Bays.

Big Fish Grill on the Riverfront

Just as its name suggests, Big Fish Riverfront will please any seafood lover with its variety of fresh dishes from the sea. It’s outdoor patio offers a view of the Christiana River.

Big Fish will begin in-person dining with limited hours of operation on June 1, with available seating made through mandated email and/or phone reservations.

Bluecoast Seafood Grill + Raw Bar

Customers far and wide come to Bluecoast for local seafood, great happy hour specials and an award-winning wine list. They stay for a stunning view that overlooks Bethany’s scenic salt pond. The Rehoboth location also has a large outdoor dining area (with a nice bar, too) that somehow disguises all the noise from busy Route 1.

All SoDel Concepts restaurants are accepting reservations for dine-in starting June 1, as well as offering online ordering and contactless curbside pickup.

Buckley’s Tavern

Columbus Inn

Grab lunch, dinner or brunch underneath twinkly lights on Columbus Inn’s covered patio, which overlooks the bustling Pennsylvania Avenue.

Constitution Yards

Constitution Yards is a staple spot on the Wilmington Riverfront during the summer months. A seasonal beer garden, it’s perfect for a socially distanced cocktail with a river view. And don’t forgot the pub-style fare.

Constitution Yards will open for in-person dining on June 1 with mandated guidelines, including social distancing and food orders placed via the Toast Takeout app, to ensure the safety of employees and customers alike.

Crooked Hammock Brewery

Toes in the sand with a beer in hand. That’s the laidback vibe at this Lewes brewpub, which specializes in backyard brews and food. Relax around a fire pit during those chilly spring evenings or snag one of the hammocks when the weather warms up.

The Cultured Pearl

Gourmet Japanese and American cuisine is the star at this downtown Rehoboth restaurant. The iconic rooftop deck is a staple for tourists and locals, and is complete with a 5,000-gallon Koi pond.

Currently offering curbside pickup and carry out seven days a week from 3-9 p.m.

Del Pez

With its specials fitting into Mexican cuisine, Del Pez allows for entire families to sit down and enjoy round after round of enchiladas, fajitas, and tacos, alongside variations of side dishes and cocktail drinks. The eatery has a spacious porch on the side of the restaurant where customers can enjoy a view of the busy riverfront.

Del Pez is currently open for takeout and delivery with limited hours of operation. Make-your-own cocktail kits are also available. The restaurant will be reopened for in-person dining on June 1 with reservations currently available.

Docklands Riverfront

Offering a riverfront view, Docklands Riverfront provides visitors comfort food and cocktails. With a contained, outdoor porch, along with new arranged seating areas indoors, this eatery places trusts within customers to be safe, while still encouraging them to take in the scenery around them.

Docklands Riverfront is currently accepting online orders via DoorDash. Their takeout menu is available on the restaurant’s website. Dine-in reservations begin June 1.

Fish On

Simple coastal cuisine and a casual atmosphere define this SoDel Concepts restaurant. Head to the outdoor patio and relax in an Adirondack chair for the ultimate relaxed dining experience.

All SoDel Concepts restaurants are accepting reservations for dine-in starting June 1, as well as offering online ordering and contactless curbside pickup.

Grain Craft Bar + Kitchen

Grain Craft Bar + Kitchen has two spots in the First State with great outdoor seating options. On Newark’s Main Street, enjoy the outdoor patio and fire pit; the Bear location has stunning views of the C and D Canal, which can be reached by car, bike or boat.

Grain H20 and Grain on Main are both open for sit-down dining, plus a new menu, as of June 1. Reservations and masks are required, visit meetatgrain.com for more information.

Half Full

Evocative of a neighborhood cottage, Half Full brings to life classic dishes such as pizza, soups, and salads with their own little, unique touch of extra, all while providing wide indoor and outdoor spaces to enjoy.

Half Full is currently only allowing carry-out orders. Their menu options are available on the restaurant’s website.

Hammerheads Dockside

The sunsets overlooking Rehoboth’s Indian River Marina at Hammerheads Dockside are just too pretty to pass up. Sip on a signature crush cocktail and enjoy oysters, tots, wings, tacos and more at the outdoor bar and seating areas.

Opening for takeout June 5 from noon-8 p.m. Friday through Monday.

Heirloom

With the everyday familiarity of your neighborhood house, Heirloom grants patrons the chance to dive into new and unknown dishes alike, all from the comfort of a space with enough room for all to have their own space, both in and outdoors.

While Heirloom is not reopening its doors at this time, the restaurant will continue providing pop-up menus for takeout delivery and curbside pick-up options under their social media account.

Irish Eyes Pub & Restaurant

Neighboring right next to the riverside, Irish Eyes Pub & Tavern brings to life an authentic Irish bar and meal menu to Delaware, while also bringing current favorites into the mix.

Irish Eyes Pub & Restaurant will be reopening on June 1 with mandatory precautions to ensure the safety of both customers and employees alike.

Iron Hill Brewery (Riverfront)

With a brewery feel along the riverfront, Iron Hill Riverfront grants customers a voluminous abode for sitting down for a meal, ordering a drink or two and taking in the urbanite view seen right from outside. The menu features both beer-inspired and vegetarian options.

Iron Hill Riverfront is currently only permitting takeout orders from noon-7:30 p.m. with limited menu options for customers. Iron Hill is also providing community members with required supplies through their established Craft Market, as well as selling make-at-home Craft Meals available for takeout and curbside pickup.

Kid Shelleen’s Charcoal House & Saloon

With modern twists to classic lunches, dinners, and everything in between, such as cheesesteak sandwiches, self-made omelets, and charcoal-grilled burgers, as well as an enclosed porch recollective of any neighborhood barbecue, Kid Shelleen’s grants customers the chance to reconnect with the familiar, while also becoming familiar with the new.

Kid Shelleen’s is now currently open for takeout and curbside pickup for limited hours of operation, with orders made online via Menufy.

La Fia Bistro

A little bit of classic European cuisine brought to the First State, La Fia introduces Old World-style signatures, including handmade pasta and fresh vegetables, to those looking for an escape to simpler times. With outdoor seating along downtown Wilmington’s Market Street to set the mood, you’ll feel transported to a Parisian café.

La Fia will be re-opening for business on June 4, with reservations now available on OpenTable. Mandatory precautions will be made to ensure the safety of both customers and employees alike.

Makers Alley

Makers Alley delivers a quaint, communal experience to all, matching the aura of a backyard gathering with family and friends. With a free, reaching space to move around, along with a variety of favorites from burgers to tacos crafted inside an Airstream converted to a kitchen, Makers Alley brings back a comfortability factor for those steadily becoming acquainted with the new way of dining out.

Makers Alley will be reopening for in-person business on June 2, with mandatory precautions will be made to ensure the safety of both customers and employees alike, including an in-person waiting list once it reaches regulated capacity.

Paradise Grill

The dining experience at Paradise Grill is hard to beat. Relax along the Indian River Bay at any of the outdoor seating areas including: the lagoon bar, beach bars, marina, Paradise Beach, kids playground and more.

Rusty Rudder

Bay views and live entertainment on the outdoor deck make this Dewey mainstay an open-air oasis.

Striper Bites

Matching their oceanside climate, Striper Bites grants a variety of seafood options for lunch and dinner, as well as an in-house bar for drinks to rival customers’ appetites. With an outdoor porch overlooking the nearby coastline, as well as an open indoor space to replicate that same outside vastness, Striper Bites promises a memorable experience.

Striper Bites will remain closed in correspondence with the Governor’s mandated stay-home orders until it is lifted.

Victoria’s Restaurant

If you’re looking for fine dining with a side of oceanfront views, Victoria’s in the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel is a perfect match. Outdoor dining on the boardwalk patio is a solid option when things start to heat up.

The dining room and patio are open as of June 1 by reservation only. Also offering a limited menu for takeout and curbside pickup.
