Bing’s Bakery will celebrate its 70th birthday on Saturday, May 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The celebration will feature a giveaway: free cupcakes for the first 250 customers.
Carla Guzzi said the baker is also planning other special treats for guests that day, including some products sold for 70 cents, possibly including cookies, apricot flakeys and coconut macaroons. Bing’s will display photos of the bakery through the years.
“It’ll be a surprise for some of the folks to coincide with 70 years [of] Bing’s Bakery, and a way to say thanks to the folks who have supported us all these years,” Guzzi says.
Guzzi and her husband, Tom, took over the bakery in 2005 and have steered it back from financial problems. That process included a visit from celebrity pastry chef Buddy Valastro, known for the TLC series “Cake Boss” and “Buddy’s Bakery Rescue,” in October 2013. Guzzi says that visit significantly helped Bing’s regain its footing.
“Sometimes we—as people do when something has been there for so long—we take it for granted,” she says. “What that show did was, it helped us in that people are coming in and saying ‘We can’t forget about Bing’s.’”
Guzzi says this birthday is a very proud landmark for her family and the business, and that they are excited to maintain the momentum they have picked up in the last few years.
