Life is Still Sweet after 10 Years of Sweet Somethings

It’s been a bumpy 10 years, but it’s been 10 years nonetheless for Sweet Somethings in Wilmington, one of the area’s premiere dessert makers. If you’ve never shopped at the store for its delicious cakes, cheesecakes, tortes, pies or tarts, you’ve likely sampled them at restaurants like Two Stones Pub, Culinaria or Vallé Cucina. Owner Lee Slaninko started the business in his house in 1997 to supply desserts to the original Iron Hill Brewery and Restaurant in Newark, then grew as the restaurants did. In 2004 he opened the retail space on Union Street, which quickly attracted the notice of local foodies and no less than Southern Living magazine. The faithful line up for the confections of sister team pastry chef Candace Ewald and head baker Tiffany Ewald. Wholesale business has waned as retail demand has grown, Slaninko says, but he expects to open a couple of satellite shops in the near future. (1006 N.
