The coffee shop and art gallery is expanding to the Lower Market Street area of downtown Wilmington in early October.

While the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered a downtown Wilmington coffee shop’s doors, another is opening in the same location.

Milk + Honey Cafe-Gallery will be expanding with a second location at 239 N. Market St., which previously housed LOMA Coffee. It will open in early October. Owner Quincy Watkins opened his first location at 807 N. Union St. in November 2019.

The new cafe will have a slight name change, Milk + Honey Cafe-Gallery at LOMA, but will offer customers the same quality food and drinks with an art gallery vibe. Watkins prides himself on quality products and service and hopes the new coffee shop becomes a neighborhood stomping ground for residents and workers in the area.

“I want us to be the Cheers of coffeehouses,” he says.

Watkins was presented with the opportunity to expand to downtown Wilmington earlier this year when it was clear LOMA Coffee would not reopen. He was beginning to see success with his North Union Street location again as they reopened in June after closing in March and began seeing an influx of new customers. So, he decided to take the opportunity and expand the Milk + Honey name.

LOMA Coffee was operated by Sycamore Hill Church and Watkins met with the group to continue a relationship. He says the coffee shop will be owned and operated by himself, but he will continue to share the space with the church.

The LOMA location will continue to offer single-origin coffee and espresso drinks, along with breakfast and lunch options. Watkins says he plans to expand the menu slightly and will include more vegan options.

The shop will also be open one night a week for the evening crowd.

Patrons will be able to dine inside the coffee shop, but can also order online and pick up items to-go. Watkins says no matter how people choose to dine at Milk + Honey, they won’t skimp on the freshness and quality.

“I only serve what I eat,” he says.

The gallery portion of the coffee shop’s concept will continue in the new space with local artists’ work hung on the walls and the shop’s participation in downtown art events.

“We’re definitely going to be involved in the downtown scene,” Watkins says.

Milk + Honey Cafe-Gallery at LOMA will be open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The one night a week and the possibility of opening on Sundays will be determined as the shop gets rolling.

“It depends on the demand,” Watkins says.
