The Delaware Burger Battle returned on Saturday, Aug. 25, to the grounds of Wilmington’s Cauffiel House, where some of Delaware’s most competitive chefs competed for fame and glory in three categories.
Newark’s Home Grown Cafe won the Best Alternative Burger award for its Gardenator burger, a housemade veggie-and-chickpea patty—made from mushrooms, cauliflower, black beans, red and green peppers, onion, garlic and oats—on a grilled Hawaiian bun, topped with Manchego cheese, vegan jalapeno ‘bacon,’ a pickle and vegan garden-jam aioli.
Wilmington’s Chelsea Tavern took home the Critics’ Choice award for its Delaware Destroyer burger featuring scrapple, pepper jack cheese, smoked tomato aioli, lettuce and onions.
Hockessin’s Redfire Grill & Steakhouse won the People’s Choice award for its ground-beef burger (brisket, chuck and sirloin) topped with extra-sharp cheddar cheese, maple-pepper bacon and housemade Thousand Island dressing.
Downtown Wilmington’s Farmer & the Cow—a newcomer to both to the city and the competition—placed as runner-up in both the Critics’ Choice and People’s Choice categories for its Bushwood Burger, piled high with prosciutto, bourbon apples and smoked Gouda.
