Delaware residents know that the First State is a hidden gem when it comes to the drinking and dining scene. Now, a Delaware lounge is getting some well-deserved recognition on Esquire‘s list of the 42 best bars to visit in America in 2024.
Simmer Down
Simmer Down is in the old money room of the bank that houses The Quoin hotel. A swanky bar tucked away in a brick-ceilinged money room is about as close to a modern-day speakeasy as you can get. A room that once stored furs, silks and gold now provides a high-class experience in a luxurious atmosphere.
Inside, a room-spanning hand-painted mural graces the walls. The 1,200-square-foot mural, painted by the Rev. Michael Alan, boasts pop culture references, famous Delawareans and local landmarks. During a visit to Wilmington, President Joe Biden stopped by the lounge to see the mural, which depicts him in his signature aviator sunglasses.
“President Biden was able to see his portrait on the mural and got quite a kick out of the likeness and had a nice chat in front of it with those around,” Tom Austin, general manager of food and beverage at The Quoin, says of Biden’s visit.
It’s easy to see how this intimate Wilmington cocktail lounge earned its place on a list of top bars alongside establishments in Miami, Beverly Hills and New York City. Once patrons have been wowed by the scenery, the cocktails at Simmer Down follow suit with intriguing flavor profiles and thoughtful presentations.
