Libation of the Month:Â Lewes Dairy Eggnog
Where to Find it: SoDel Concepts restaurants
In coastal Sussex County, the holidays arrive when Lewes Dairy eggnog hits the shelves. The beloved beverage has been a favorite since the dairy began bottling it in the 1940s. What’s the appeal? Credit the fat content, which is higher than most versions. (The standard is 6 percent.)
The product became widely available in 2012 when Lewes Dairy, founded in 1919 by Grace and Emory Brittingham, merged with Wilmington-based Hy-Point Dairy Farm. Some maintain that the eggnog has changed. However, the recipe is the same.
SoDel Concepts’ restaurants use the eggnog as a creamy base for seasonal cocktails. The Clubhouse at Baywood in Millsboro has spiked it with Captain Morgan, Cruzan Rum and Kahlua, and rimmed the martini glass with cinnamon and sugar. In Rehoboth, Lupo Italian Kitchen has offered a similar martini, but it’s topped with cinnamon.
Bluecoast Seafood Grill & Raw Bar in Rehoboth has crafted The Nutcracker, made with Bailey’s Irish Cream with hazelnut, freshly brewed coffee and Lewes Dairy eggnog. A crème de menthe drizzle adds the festive touch.
Of course, you can always make your own libation. Just grab your favorite rum, sit back, sip—and don’t count calories!
