Some people say, “Don’t mess with a good thing.” But Tom Houser, the owner of The Copperhead Saloon, has never been afraid of change. On Dec. 1, he officially unveiled the Greenville cocktail bar’s new name, The Copper Dram. The transformation came about when he received a letter in the mail from the owners of a restaurant by the same name in Allentown, Pa.
Not realizing the trademark of the restaurant name extended beyond the state of Pennsylvania, Houser decided that after 2 and a half years, it was time for a change.
“We are knocking the dust off. We are redoing the logo, hoping to catch the eye of people who still haven’t heard of us,” he says. In fact, the new name is a nod to the drink of choice. “The name is derived from an old-timey recipe book because a dram is a unit of measure,” he says.
With a new name, Houser decided to kick things up a notch. Houser says he will be expanding the wine and beer options as well as the food menus in the coming weeks, with plenty of sliders, flatbreads and even stuffed pork tenderloin. But he does emphasize that The Copper Dram is still not a restaurant. “It is an upscale cocktail bar for people 21 and up,” he says.
