This Rehoboth Beach Restaurant Serves Quick, Casual Comfort Food

Chef Hari Cameron’s grandpa (MAC) offers over 15 unique pasta dishes, salads, paninis and more.

With so many delicious dining options available at the Delaware beaches, sometimes the choices can get a little overwhelming. Plus, with all the variety, sometimes a restaurant that’s been right under your nose the whole time gets overlooked.

That’s why during the latest trek to the beach, my fiancé and I decided to finally stop at grandpa (MAC), the brainchild of James Beard nominee Hari Cameron (Cameron’s other restaurant, a(MUSE.) just earned a 2019 Best of Delaware award for Best Restaurant in Rehoboth Beach) and his brother, Orion. The duo’s downtown Rehoboth location opened in 2015 and they soon opened another location on Route 1 in the same shopping center as The Pickled Pig Pub. The restaurant is named for the brother’s own great-grandfather, who is illustrated on the wall and who passed away in 1998.

The restaurant is super casual—you place your order at the front counter then take a seat and wait for your fresh and funky food to be delivered. The day we dined at the Route 1 location, I ordered the special of the day: The Crabby Little Devil. The campanelle pasta (shaped like a cone with a ruffled edge), was tossed with crab, tomato sauce, mushrooms, basil, parmesan, Frank’s RedHot sauce and red pepper flakes.

The pasta dishes are available in three sizes, and trust me when I say the medium is massive. My fiancé ordered the Delmarva Dog, a deconstructed hot dog dish with large elbow pasta drenched in creamy cheddar with hot dog bites, pickled jalapenos, onions and a crunchy Doritos crumble on top. I admit that I helped him eat his because it was so creamy, cheesy and divine.

There are over a dozen pasta creations on the menu and a handful of them are vegan, too. Don’t over look ordering a salad though—we split a full-size house salad, a delicious blend of arugula and romaine, cherry tomatoes, blue cheese crumbles, pine nuts and blue cheese dressing. The food comes served on a tray with wax paper and already in an aluminum to-go container. The pièce de résistance? The Werther’s Original that arrives with your food—the perfect ending to soothing, soulful meal.
