Back in early May, my fiancé and I were bar-hopping at the beach and ran in to some nice ladies at The Pickled Pig Pub in Rehoboth. We already had eaten a bunch of appetizers throughout the day and were looking to grab a pizza and head home for the night. Both of the ladies said—almost in unison: “Go to Mr. P’s—it’s the absolute best.”
I looked up the menu to the no-frills Italian joint and saw plenty of pizzas that were calling my name—the classic margherita, the San Giorgio (topped with tomato sauce, shredded whole milk mozzarella, ground Italian sausage and pepperoni) and the Carnivore’s Dream (topped with tomato sauce, shredded whole milk mozzarella, ham, pepperoni, ground Italian sausage, bacon and homemade meatballs).
To stop myself from drooling, I demanded my fiancé get on the horn and place an order—take note that the cash-only eatery does not deliver. Sadly, our margherita pizza wasn’t going to be ready for 90 minutes (we later learned that Mr. P’s only has one oven, so if you want your pizza ready at a specific time, call and place your order as soon as they open)
Regardless of how hungry we both were, the pizza was worth the wait. The crust has a nice crunch and flavor to it. The pizzas come in four different sizes that range from four to 10 slices. The sauce is also nice and chunky with a sweet tomato flavor.
The restaurant is tiny, but there is very often a line out the door of people waiting to dine in and to pick up food to go. If you decide to dine-in, the drink menu includes beer flights with 19 draft beers to choose from, including selections from local craft breweries. There’s also bottled beer, gluten-free beer and craft wine options to wash down your pizza with.
Mr P’s recently celebrated 20 years in business. My only regret is that I wish I had met those kind ladies at the bar much, much sooner.
