New digs: The venerable La Tonalteca chain has added two more links to its Tex-Mex empire. The first, in Christiana, is already open. A second, in Millsboro, is coming soon.
La Tonalteca Christiana (1237 Churchmans Road, Newark, 294-1108) is the place to check out some new Tonalteca creations like pasta Mexicana, tropical mojitos, rico salsa and the Señorita Margarita, an all-natural, low-carb drink version of their signature drink. Saturday, March 12: The signature event for our region’s biggest oenophiles at Frank’s Union Wine Mart—the 14th Annual Frank’s Golden Wine Event—commences Saturday night at 6:30 from The Hotel DuPont Gold Ballroom.
Bucking the traditional “walkaround” format of such events, Frank’s and the Hotel have divided the festivities into five distinct sections (or “pods”) that reflect the wine and cuisine of a different wine-growing region. Those pods are:
• Italian Cucina
• French Bistro
• South American Grill & Australian Barbi
• Spanish Tapas
• California & Pacific Northwest Cuisine
So, for example: Within the “Italian Cucina” pod you might find bruschetta, porcini risotto, calamari, pesto tortellini, cured meats, olives and cheeses, tiramisu, cannoli and biscotti paired with Prosecco, Gavi, Barolo, Amarone, Brunello di Montalcino and Vin Santo. In the “French Bistro” discover triple Brie and pate Maison, savory crepes and lamb chop lollipops complemented by Grand Cru Burgundy, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Classified Growth Bordeaux and Champagne.
Get it? Good.
This year, Frank’s Golden will benefit the Children’s Tumor Foundation, a non-profit foundation dedicated to families affected by neurofibromatosis. In addition to tons of wine and food, the popular rare wine silent auction returns with even more old vintages, signed bottles, etched bottles, vertical lots, cult wines and other hard-to-find goodies.

Saturday, March 12: It’s not the fanciest beer tasting in town, but it’s damn sure one of the funnest. It’s the annual Wilmington St. Patrick’s Day Parade, and it goes live at noon this Saturday on King Street. I crunched some numbers on the famous parade for the March issue of Delaware Today.
