Where to Enjoy an Apple a Day at the Beach this Fall

Savor autumn’s signature flavor in coastal Sussex County.

 

Just 30 minutes from Lewes, the Apple-Scrapple Festival in Bridgeville this weekend will showcase one of Sussex County’s favorite fruits. But it’s not the only place where you can find autumn’s signature flavor.

At Historic Lewes Farmers Market, held on Saturdays, and the Rehoboth Beach Farmers Market, held on Tuesdays, Fifer Orchards is selling apples grown in its Camden-Wyoming orchards. The family farm offers up to 25 varieties and brings six different kinds, along with cider and apple cider donuts. On Oct. 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Fifer will open the seasonal stand in Dewey Beach for a one-day-only fall sale.

Old World Breads, another frequent vendor at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market, is baking apple pies, whole wheat pastry tarts with apple (a gourmet Pop-Tart), apple coffee cakes and apple cider donuts. Find them at the market or in the bakery.

Half Full is currently offering the Dublin Pig, a gourmet pizza with Fifer Orchards apples, braised pork, Dubliner Irish Cheddar Cheese and garlic sauce. For dessert? Apple cider donut cupcakes.

Belly up to Heirloom’s bar for a cider-bourbon smash, which is chef Matt Kern’s favorite drink, and then tuck into foie gras with an apple gastrique, sourdough bread, mustard greens and a caramel corn garnish. Kern is also serving pan-seared trout with Honeycrisp apples.

Palate Bistro’s dessert menu includes freshly baked apple-cranberry dumplings with pumpkin ice cream from Hopkins Farm Creamery.

Beginning tomorrow, Bluecoast Seafood Grill + Raw Bar will unveil its fall menu, featuring warm apple-and-butternut-squash crisp with maple and rosemary, topped with vanilla ice cream.

At Matt’s Fish Camp, recent specials have included a bone-in Berkshire pork chop with apple chutney and an apple buckle, which chef Maurice Catlett says is like a streusel-topped coffee cake. In addition, he’s currently working on apple kimchi.

Hurry over to Brimming Horn Meadery for the last bottles of the Apple Butter Cyser, which have been flying off the shelves since their late September release. If the meadery runs out of apple Butter Cyser, consider another fall favorite, the pumpkin-spice mead Basic Witch.

Chef Hari Cameron has put duck scrapple with apples on the menu at a(MUSE.). Ask for his punch made with Fifer Orchards cider and Dogfish Head’s Compelling Gin.

Dogfish Head’s spirits line also includes Esprit Malade, a tart blend of apple brandy, raw apple cider and Dogfish Head’s Sick Cider. (The latter is an unfiltered, rustic cider made with Fuji, Roman, Stayman, Red Delicious and Golden Delicious apples from Fifer Orchards). The blend is sold at the Milton brewery and the Rehoboth brewpub. On Oct. 18, Dogfish Head and Dewey Beer Co. will collaborate on an apple-cider-donut beer, which will be released at Analog A Go Go Nov. 1-18.
