Cin Cin!

Glasses go *clink* for Vendemmia, and Wilmo gets a hip new pub.

Welcome to Home Skillet, where Italian stereotypes are quieted, if only for a week. Here’s our local events this week:

Sunday, October 11: Societa da Vinci’s ever-popular Vendemmia Wine Festival, a big ol’ Italian-style celebration of food, wine and Italian culture, rolls into town again this Sunday.
Local home chefs and winemakers come out in droves for wine and gravy (don’t dare call it sauce in this crowd, or expect a wooden spoon to the back of the head) contests.
Also, between local Italian cuisine giants like La Casa Pasta, Ristorante Pomodoro, Soffritto Italian Grill, Café Mezanotte to a few surprises (Cupcake Heaven? Orillas Tapas? Hmm), it looks like restaurant participation will be huge this year.
As always, expect great entertainment, Frank Sinatra impersonators, and, well, lots of wine. This year, the Societa will give attendees a chance at a trip to Italy.
Advanced tickets will run you $40 and $45 at the gate. It all goes down beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday from Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park in Wilmington. Click here for more.

Now through Sunday, October 11: From the News Journal comes Delaware Dines Out, a statewide restaurant week-type event that encompasses more than 50 places around Delaware. Each participating restaurant will offer a three-course meal for just $30 throughout the week, which, if you happen to be dining at participating spots like The Green Room or Eden, is a darn good deal.     New digs: Public House, a hip, upscale pub and restaurant that’s dropped anchor in Philly, New York and National Harbor, Md. is opening shop at 9th and Market streets in Wilmington a bit later this month. I spoke with owner Gary Cardi, who will be running the front of (The Public) house—he says if all things go according to plan, they’ll be ready to serve lunch and dinner starting on Monday, October 19.
A website is in the works over at http://www.publichousewilmington.com/, but they’re still working on adding pictures and menus for the new location. For an idea of how things worked over at the Philly location, take a gander here.
Obviously, this is pretty awesome news for the Downtown Wilmo/Market Street revitalization efforts. Public House will be situated on the ground floor of the old Delaware Trust, part of The Buccini/Pollin Group’s mega $170 million Market Street Initiative. Cardi and his crew, which includes chef Aaron Bukowski (previously of Iron Hill, Amici’s in Landenberg, Pa., and Mile High Steaks and Seafood in Glen Mills), hope to capture downtown crowds with good, American pub-style food at a decent price.
Keep your eyes glues here and to PH’s website for updates.
