7 Good Things You Can Do for Yourself at the Beach This February

Here are some suggestions for beating the winter doldrums along the coast this month.

1. Play pickleball

The hottest racket sport at the beach is guaranteed to warm you up, and now you can play it at The Brush Factory at Kings, which last month added two indoor pickleball courts. Sessions start at 9 a.m. and run through afternoon and evening hours, seven days a week. (And then after the game, you can go shopping in the merchant area!) To reserve a court, call 302-703-7715 or sign up online

2. Take a cooking class

Fire up the burners and break out the cocktail ice: Big Fish Grill is hosting a cooking class from 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15. The restaurant’s hands-on series always features items from its menu.

3. Let the good times roll

With help from Louisiana native Megan Jones, Fork + Flask at Nage in Rehoboth will be offering New Orleans-style food and cocktails on Mardi Gras, which is Tuesday, Feb. 13. Stop by from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m.

4. Get gussied up

Mark your calendar for the annual Dewey Winter Gala on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 8 p.m. Hosted by the Dewey Business Partnership and held at the Rusty Rudder, this see-and-be-seen party will feature Joe Bachman & the Party, The Blue Cats, Ben Leroy & the Snap, and the Hollywood Nights. Tickets are $90.

5. Take charge of your health

Since February is American Heart Month, it’s an apt time for Beebe Healthcare’s annual Health Fair, scheduled for Feb. 10 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Atlantic Sands Hotel & Conference Center. The free event includes speakers, health screenings, cooking demonstrations, door prizes and light refreshments.

6. Smell the roses—and book Valentine’s Day reservations

Thursday, Feb. 8, is the last day to order Valentine’s Day roses from the in-house florist at Millsboro’s The Clubhouse at Baywood. (The price is $15 for a single rose, $40 for half a dozen and $75 for a dozen; email shelby@baywoodclubhouse.com.) The Clubhouse is also offering romantic dinner selections for Valentine’s Day, including a 12-ounce wagyu New York strip steak, porcini-dusted halibut and butter-poached lobster tails.

Or, if you want to have a special dinner just because, every Wednesday is lobster night at The Clubhouse. For $25, guests can order a 1.25-pound whole steamed lobster with a baked potato and green beans.

7. Find a furry friend

The Brandywine Valley SPCA is unveiling its in-store cat adoption center during the grand opening of PetSmart’s new Route 1 store in Rehoboth. The event takes place on Feb. 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A cuddly kitten is sure to chase away winter’s gray!
