7 Spine-Tingling Events Happening at the Beach This Weekend

Head to the coast for some of the state’s best Halloween celebrations.

Don’t be surprised if you catch a glimpse of ghosts, goblins and mummies parading down Rehoboth Avenue on Saturday. It’s time for The Sea Witch Festival, which is scheduled from Oct. 27–29. This is the 28th year for the family-friendly event, which includes a broom-tossing contest, hayrides, a costume parade and contest (for pets and people), trick-or-treating, live entertainment and a surfboarding and skimboarding contest. This is one of the city’s most popular events, so be prepared to hobnob with a lot of hobgoblins.

The festival is not the only Halloween activity at the beach this weekend. Lantern tours of the Indian River Life-Saving Station will mix some spine-tingling ghost stories. Tours are offered between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27, and Saturday, Oct. 28. The cost is $10.

On Saturday, Oct. 28, you can also explore the “Mysteries of History” on a walking tour with guide Beth Gott, who will take participants on a tour of unusual tombstones of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lewes. The tours leave the Zwaanendael Museum at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Reservations are required. Call 302-645-1148.

In Bethany Beach, costumed families and pets will participate in the Wags, Witches and Warlocks Halloween Festival and Parade. The parade and costume contest, which raises money for Partners for Paws DE, starts at 10 a.m. Registration is at 9 a.m. Kids can paint pumpkins then get their face painted.

On Saturday, Oct. 28, at 9 p.m., head to the Milton Theatre for “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Doors open at 8 p.m., and the move starts at 9 p.m. The event is for ages 17 and older. Tickets are $5–$10.

This is the last weekend for Screams at the Beach in Georgetown, which includes haunted houses, trails, hayrides, mazes and zombie “paintball.” This year, the event also boasts escape rooms.
