9 Ways to Celebrate the First Day of Summer

Do something special on the longest day of the year.

It seems like yesterday that the sun was setting just a few hours after lunchtime. Now you can still see it peering through the trees long after dinner! Wednesday, June 21, is the first official day of summer, as well as the longest day of the year. Take advantage of all the extra sunlight with the bucket list below.

1. Set a goal.

The first day of any season is the perfect excuse to tackle something you’ve been putting off. Whether you begin working toward a fitness goal or waking up a few minutes earlier, approach today as a fresh start.

2. Have a picnic.

Throw down a big blanket in a scenic spot and enjoy some uninterrupted time with friends and family. (We’d recommend Lums Pond State Park.)

3. Indulge in your favorite flavor of ice cream.

Try the rolled ice cream craze at Sweet Charlie’s in Rehoboth, or indulge in a classic cone at Sweet Lucy’s in Wilmington.

4. Go to a waterpark.

Looking for a fun way to beat the heat with the kids? Get everyone’s adrenaline pumping at Killens Pond Water Park in Felton.

5. Sport something new.

Splurge on a stylish bathing suit, a fresh haircut or a beauty product you’ve been dying to try. If you live in or near Rehoboth, stroll around the trendy Tanger Outlets.

6. Go canoeing or kayaking.

Paddle along the peaceful waters of Brandywine Creek State Park. We don’t know what’s better: the awesome workout or the beautiful wildlife.

7. Create the ultimate summer soundtrack.

There’s nothing better than belting out some sunny tunes with the windows down. Plan the perfect playlist for your next road trip—or even just your errands around town.

8. Try geocaching.

Head to Trap Pond State Park in Laurel with a few friends and a GPS, and explore all evening long.

9. Watch the sunset.

End the first day of summer on a high note! Find a spot on the Rehoboth Bay a few minutes before 8:28 p.m. for an unobstructed view.
