The scoop: This former grand manor house, completed in 1903, is an architectural one-of-a-kind that combines Queen Anne Victorian with Italian Renaissance and Edwardian features. Inside, it is graciously appointed with gleaming woodwork and Italian marble. Three presidents—Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt and William Howard Taft—stayed here when it was a private home. The manor, now restored to its early 1900s grandeur, opened as a bed and breakfast last year.
Amenities: A full breakfast is included with overnight stay.
Don’t miss: Visit the Harriet Tubman Museum and Educational Center to learn about the life and works of this famed Underground Railroad “conductor.” In June, ospreys hatch, young eagles begin to take flight and songbirds nest at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. Blackwater also has a large population of breeding bald eagles, and sightings are prevalent throughout the year.
