Love brought Alexis Harris to Delaware, but when the college romance fizzled, the North Carolina native decided to stay put. “I love Delaware now,” says the Wilmington resident. Indeed, the marketing pro likes it so much that she started First State Destinations, a business promoting Delaware’s attractions, entertainment and cultural scenes.
Harris started her project on TikTok in 2020 and launched an Instagram account the following year. She is also on Facebook, and her website, heylexis.com, recently went live. In addition, there’s the private First State Destinations: Delaware’s Food, Views and Vibes Social Group for those who want to organize meetups.
People turn to the influencer to learn what’s happening in Delaware that’s beyond the norm, and we’re no different. So, in no particular order, here are her suggestions.
Float like you’re on the Dead Sea
For feel-good vibes, Harris goes to First State Floats in Newark, which offers flotation therapy. Clients recline in a tank partially filled with saltwater. “It’s an amazing experience,” Harris says. “They play relaxing music if you want it, and some rooms have stargazing. You’ll think that you are in Los Angeles.”
Book an experience with the Harp and Hare
This Dover company offers luxury picnics—including events at Penns Woods—and even provides room décor. “You decide your theme, such as a girls night or date night,” Harris explains. “They handle the setup and food. The attention to detail makes it a four-star experience.”
Tour the state in style
Whether you’re going to a casino, a festival or dinner, the trip is part of the experience, Harris maintains. Make it memorable by renting a limo or party bus. Delaware Limousine is her go-to for that “movie moment.”
Shine your light
Harris fell for candle-making at a D+M Candle Co. event at Petit Social Studio in Delaware City. The Delaware-based company holds several sip-and-pour parties—or you can host your own. As for the venue, Harris calls it a “perfectly curated event space right on the water.”
Throw out your frustrations
Heaving an ax toward a target is all the rage, and Delaware has several locations. Kiss My Axe in Milford has five standard targets and four projected targets. (It also has a mobile ax-throwing trailer.)
Harris also recommends Lefty’s Alley & Eats in Lewes, which offers ax-throwing, bowling, an arcade and a full-service restaurant. “It’s almost like you’re in Las Vegas,” she says. Lefty’s, however, boasts a location next to the coast, yet another Delaware attraction.
